ST. PHILIP’S MINISTRY TO THE CARILLON RETIREMENT HOME
St. Philip’s offers Sunday services at the Carillon Retirement Home for the residents. It is such a rewarding experience for those of us assisting, and the residents who attend regularly express their real need for the service. Other than the first Sunday of the month (presented by another church), we offer the service at the Carillon every Sunday, from 9:30 to 10 a.m. in the Carillon dining room. WE NEED YOUR HELP. . .Playing the piano, welcoming the residents, or leading the service. We will develop a list of those willing to serve and a monthly schedule based on availability. PLEASE CONTACT. . .Loraine Armstrong, 754-8656, for more information and directions to Carillon.
BAZAAR BUZZ
We have more workshops coming up, so please add them to your schedule! May Moore and Carol Beers are offering a jewelry workshop on Friday, August 20th from 10 am until noon at the Parish Hall. Following the workshop we will gather for lunch at Baked with Love. We are asking that you bring beads from no longer used jewelry, wire cutters and needle nose pliers. We plan to make eyeglass chains and earrings. Please let Cathie Courtnage, (253-9159) or Carol Beers, (253-0890) know that you can attend. (If you can't make the workshop, but have some loose beads or other interesting bobbles that could be used, please drop them off on the porch at the church office.)
Please also attend the other remaining workshops:
Sewing Group: August 12th at 1:00 at Theresa Zell's (457-9032)
Cork Workshop: September 10th from 10-2 at Ida Parker's (278-6719) Bring lunch and a glue gun.
*Sign ups to help at the 2010 BAZAAR on October 2nd will begin the first Sunday in September (5th). Please put the date of the bazaar on your calendar and plan to help!
With just a little over 2 months left before the BAZAAR, we know you are now finishing up your at-home projects! We will also be looking for some wonderful baked goods, so start digging through those recipes!
Thanks so much for all your efforts!
STEPHEN MINISTRY
St. Philip’s has recently enrolled in the Stephen Series, a program that trains and organizes members of the congregation to provide additional caring ministry. Father Barry, Gene and Martha Myers and Andrea Veri recently attended a seven-day Stephen Leader training course in Orlando. Soon they will begin the process of selecting, and then training other members of St. Philip’s to be Stephen Ministers. Please don’t hesitate to ask Gene, Martha, Andrea or Father Barry more about the program. Continue to watch for more information on this expansion of our current Pastoral Care Ministry program.
Do You Enjoy Knitting?
St. Philip's prayer shawl ministry group meets at 10:00 AM on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays in the Parish Hall. The gathering is open to all, but if it doesn't fit your schedule or you are unable to attend, you can still participate. You can knit or crochet shawls and drop them at the church office. Shawls should be of washable material and approximately 17 to 22 inches wide and 50 to 70 inches long. While making this shawl may seem like a small gesture, this special ministry repeatedly receives messages that wearing or holding their prayer shawl makes the recipient feel calm, peaceful and strengthened. Please join in to reach out to people in times of need. Knit one, purl one, comfort one. For additional information please contact Evelyn King (278-3220) or Danice Paxton (253-5230).
GIFT NOOK
The Women’s Group is proud to announce the establishment of a “Gift Nook” in the Bell Tower Narthex. We will be using the breakfront for our display. We will be offering the Book of Common Prayer, 2 books about baptism, 2 books of prayer for young children and a teen prayer book. We will have birthday, sympathy and Christmas cards. We will also have various note cards and bookmarkers. Use of the Gift Nook will be on the honor system and we ask for exact change or a check. Please make checks out to St. Philip’s Women Group. Please take a few minutes to come by the Gift Nook. For more information or questions please call Heather Adams 253-9392.
FOOD PANTRY DONATIONS NEEDED
The Southport Oak Island Interchurch Fellowship Food Pantry is currently in need of donations. The food pantry accepts non-perishable food items (canned fruits and vegetables, rice, pasta, soup, etc.) and paper goods. If you can, please help those that are in need. Donations may be dropped off anytime at St. Philip’s office or before service on Sunday. For more information call 269-1034.
COMMUNION AT HOME
If you cannot come to church, church can come to you. Parish members who are Eucharistic Visitors bring Sunday communion to homes and assisted living residences regularly. They would be glad to include you. Some receiving communion where they live make one-time requests; others are regulars. If you would like communion brought to you or a family member, please call the Parish Office 910-457-5643.
St. Philip’s Now Has An Established Endowment Fund
With an endowment gift, you can be a part of the future mission and ministry of St. Philip’s. It is easy to make an endowment gift. It can be done with a current gift or one at your death by putting a provision in your Will or Trust, or by a beneficiary designation of a portion of your retirement account or life insurance policy, or by any number of other creative ways. For more information please contact the church office.
